Following the great success of last year’s inaugural alumni game, former Wyoming Cowboy basketball players will return to the Arena-Auditorium this Saturday evening for a second reunion. All of the alumni game festivities will be free to the public.
The game itself is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m., following the conclusion of the Cowboy football season opener against Weber State. The alumni events will begin with a 3-point shooting contest at 4:30 p.m. and will culminate with an autograph session following the game. Fans may bring their own memorabilia to the game for autographs.
Once again, the alumni game was spearheaded by UW Hall of Fame basketball great Reggie Slater. In all, 17 former Cowboys will play in the alumni game and numerous others will be in attendance watching from the stands.
“We had so much fun last year that we couldn’t wait to start planning this year’s game,” Slater said. “We all love the idea of continuing to play this game and we hope that we can create some staying power.
“We had a great turnout last year, but we are hoping to have even more fans and friends in the Double-A this year. Laramie is going to be busy this weekend with some great events, and we hope people can come out, bring their family and friends, and spend part of their Saturday night with the Cowboy basketball family.”
Former players scheduled to play on the Gold Team include Brad Enzi, Rick Henry, Kerry McIntyre, Gregg Sawyer, Joe Ries, Reggie Slater, Kenny Smith, Ryan Wildenborg and Alex Dunn. Brown Team members include David Adams, Brett McFall, Tim Breaux, Justin French, Ugo Udezue, Roman Totta, Bobby Traylor and Derek Wabbington.
In addition to the 3-point contest, game and autograph session, Cowboy fans will have a chance to mingle with these former Cowboy basketball players at Pepsi’s Tailgate Park during the pregame festivities prior to the UW/Weber State football game. The team will be located in a tent on the southeast side of tailgate park.
All of the weekend’s alumni activities are being held in memory of Oliver Wilson. Wilson, a former Cowboy during the late 1980s, passed away this past Monday after a long battle with cancer.
Merchandise for the 2009 Alumni game, which includes t-shirts and posters, are being sold at the Brown and Gold Outlet. Portions of the proceeds will go to the Oliver Wilson Cancer Fund and donations can also be made to the Wilson family through UniWyo Federal Credit Union.
